Two little girls. Long dark hair. Bi-lingual. New environment, a little afraid.
In walks the white lady.
In walks the white lady.
Different from their mom's.
Unsure of which language to choose.
But able to communicate.... through touch.
According to Psychology Today, "...We begin receiving tactile signals even before birth, as the vibration of our mother's heartbeat is amplified by amniotic fluid. No wonder then that touch plays a critical role in parent-child relationships from the start: "It's an essential channel of communication with caregivers for a child," says San Diego State University School of Communication emeritus professor Peter Andersen, author of Nonverbal Communication: Forms and Functions."
Often overwhelmed with cross-cultural communication differences, it's easy for me to withdraw, pull away, hide because I wish the words I knew would be the same ones another knew.
Children are gracious
Quick learners
Able to break down barriers
Still willing
To touch
